Walnut profile

walnusskerne-foodigenceBotanical name

Juglans spp. L

Family

Walnut family

Origin of the name

The name “walnut” (from Middle High German welsch nuz) of the fruit of Juglans regia originally means “Welsh (i.e. Romansh) nut”, as it came into German via France or Italy.

Origin/Cultivation

Walnuts literally existed in a land before our time. The walnut tree probably dates back to the Ice Age. Finds from Turkey and Syria confirm that our Stone Age ancestors already gathered walnuts.
In ancient times, the nuts were also consumed in large quantities, and in ancient Rome they were called "Jovis flans," or acorns of Jupiter. Charlemagne ensured that walnut trees were cultivated throughout his empire. Even today, many people have a walnut tree in their garden.
