Profile of black beans
Botanical name
Phaseolus vulgaris
Family
Legumes / Fabaceae
nickname
Turtle bean
Origin of the name
The name is derived from the Middle High German word 'bone,' meaning bean. Therefore, the names (likely) commemorate farmers who cultivated beans many years ago. Origin/Cultivation: The black bean is one of the oldest foods in existence. It has been found in the cooking pots of North, South, and Central America for more than 7,000 years. It was a staple food of Native Americans. The black bean probably originated in Mexico in Central America, but early traces of the legume have also been found in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
Happen
In South America, bean cultivation began in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela, and Colombia. Black beans are now cultivated in many countries around the world. The most important growing countries are outside Europe, but in recent years, black bean cultivation has also been concentrated in Europe.
